「快楽」と聞くと、反射的に「いけないこと」というイメージを持たれる方が多いのではないでしょうか。　ではその「快楽」とはどういうものでしょう。　まず、食欲や性欲など、生物的な欲求を満たすことで得られる「快楽」があります。高価な美食を追求したり、風俗店に足繁く通ったりするのがわかりやすい例でしょうか。

また、アルコールやタバコ、麻薬や覚醒剤など、特定の物質を摂取することにより得られる快楽もあります。さらには、買い物やギャンブル、コンピュータゲームやＳＮＳ、チャットなど、いわゆる趣味的なものに「ハマる」ことも、一種の快楽でしょう。　程度の差こそあれ、これらは、私たちが人生の目的を達成する妨げとなる存在であるとお考えの方も多いと思います。　ところがこの両者──人生の目的のために真摯に努力することと、快楽に我を忘れること──には、同じ脳内物質が関わっているのです。　何かを成し遂げ、社会的に評価されて喜びを感じるとき、友人や家族や恋人から感謝やお祝いの言葉を聞いて幸福感に包まれるとき、私たちの脳の中では、快楽をもたらす物質「ドーパミン」が大量に分泌されています。

この物質は食事やセックス、そのほかの生物的な快楽を脳が感じるときに分泌されている物質、またギャンブルやゲームに我を忘れているときに分泌されている物質とまったく同じなのです。これは一体どういうことなのでしょう。　ご存じのように、ヒトという生き物は大脳新皮質、つまり「ものを考える脳」を発達させることで繁殖に成功してきました。　狩りをしたり、植物の実を食べたり、繁殖期に異性を見つけて交尾したり、今を生きるために必要なことならほかの動物にもできます。　ところがヒトという種は、遠い将来のことを見据えて作物を育てたり、家を建てたり、さらには村や国を作り、ついには何の役に立つのかわからない、科学や芸術といったことに懸命に力を注ぐような生物です。そういった、一

　もし、教育がこのように、人間をして数年の問に数千年も飛びこすことができるようにするものであるのなら、今日の人びとは、将来のある時期に到達すると思われる教育をいま普及させることによって、未来にむかって数百年もの飛躍をすることができるであろう。したがって、これから数年後におそらくおこってくる変化を予測し、できるだけ早く、もっとも望ましいと思われるこれらの変化をとり入れなければならないのである』とジョージーギャラップはその著書で熱意をこめて説いている。

　まさにその通りである。いささかの異論をさしはさむ余地もない。しかし、ほんとうに耳をかたむけなければならぬことばはそのあとにくる。

　彼は、アメリカにおける教育が、人間の知能の開発にほとんど役に立っていない、と断定して、こういう。

　『どのような学校教育方式をとってみても、多くの学生に知識の主要な分野をマスターさせ、重

要な伝達能力をあたえることに、目立って成功していない。これらは重大な欠陥である。しかし

もっと大きな欠点は、学生の知的能力を大きく伸ばすことに成功していないことである。創造的

な才能をもっと十分に発達させ、自分や社会の問題に対する新しく、よりよい解決を得るには、』

どうすればよいのかを示してやるといったような努力は、驚くほどなされていないのである。

　それに、もっと根本的に大切なことがある。……学生にとって人間の歴史上の偉大な思想や偉大な作品や偉大な事件について知ることは大切なことである。しかし、それだけが目的ではない

数世紀にわたる怠慢をとりもどすのに大いに役立つのである。開発できることが明らかになっているいくっかの知的能力をここに列挙しよう』

　といって、知覚、集中、組織づけ、客観性、問題解決と意志決定、創造性の六項目をあげた上で、　『もし、頭脳の直接のトンーニングが教育の正式の目標として受け入れられれば、教育制度の革新的な改善が必要である。

　ハックスリーは、頭脳を訓練する効果的な方法を発見するためには、。望ましい人間の能力を実現ずるための、様々な技術を吟味するための世界的規模の調査をおこなって、種々の技術の基礎となっている（原理）をさがし、最終的にはこれらの技術と原理を、一般的な教育のすべての

　といってから、そういう「原川」「技術」のひとつの例として、

　たとえば、知覚のトレーニングは何世紀も前にさかのぼることができる。

そんなことができるのか？

　できるのである。前の項で、オリヴィエ教授のいったことばを想い出していただきたい。彼はこういっている。「まさしくわれわれは必要とする以上の神経細胞を所有し、脳の障害の場合、傷ついた細胞の代りをする以外はなにもしない余分な皮質ニューロン″眠れるニューロン″を持っているのだ。……われわれがこれらの眠れるニューロンを目ざめさせ使用するなら、これらの潜在的特質はその姿を現わすであろう」と。では、いったい、われわれは、どれはどの″眠れるニューロン”を持っているの‘だろう

　『世界のすべての人間が電話を持っているとして、それぞれの電話が世界中の別のそれぞれの電話と結ばれるものとし、従って各人が別のすべての人と互いに通信できる場合を考えてみればよい。そんなことで、少なくともいくらかは人間の脳の容量と複雑さがわかってもらえると思う』

　そのたとえを利用させてもらって、私はさらにこういいたい。

　世界中の人間がひとり残らず電話を持っていて、あなたはそれらの電話と即時通話のできるＩ

一〇、〇〇〇本の専用電話を持っている。その一〇、〇〇〇本の電話であなたは世界中の人間とひ

っきりなしに情報の交換をし合っている情景である。しかもあなたの受けとった情報は、すべて

　ジョージーギヤラップは、人間の脳の容量と複雑さといったが、私は、″性能″といいたい。

ヒトの頭脳はこれだけの性能を持っているのだ。もちろん、あなたが、である。これだけの性能をフル回転したら、どんなにすばらしい仕事ができるだろう？

　″そこで″と、Ｇ・Ｒこアイラーが、まるでそのあとをひきつぐかのように、「人間に未来はあるか」でこう述べる。

　『最近とり上げられている革命的な考え、脳の使われないでいる能力、潜在能力を利用しようと

いう考えを、ある条件のもとで扱ってみよう。脳は対称的な二つの部分からできている。右きき

　どうだろう？　あなたも不精をして、わずか五パーセントくらいの大脳皮質など動かしておらず、もう少しＩ、フル回転せよなどとはいわない。もしもそんな人間があらわれたら、超・超、

超人間になってしまうだろうから、せめてＩ〇八Ｉセントか一五パーセントくらいはたらかせてみたらどうだろう？　それでもあなたは、あの、カールーフリードリッヒーガウスの親友になれるのではないだろうか？

　え？　そういう方法？　ないことはない、ちゃんとあるのだから－。
