第三の目というのをご存じですか？」
「ずうっと以前に、そういう題名の本を読んだことがあります。なんとかいう英国人が、チペ。第一章『ホロン革命』と『密教･超能力の秘密』の対論–一一一一一一-
トでラマ僧について密教の修行をし、眉間のあいだに、四次元世界や霊界を見ることのできる第三の目を持つたという内容で、ベストセラーになりましたね。もうほとんど内容を記憶しておりませんが、読んだおぼえがあります。

と、こうのべております」
「その第三の目が、つまり、先生のおっしゃる霊性の部位というわけですか？」
「いや、ちょっとちがいます。密接な関係はあるが、ちょっとちがいます。第三の目は、ラトクリフのいうように、松果腺です。わたくしのいう霊性の場は、それよりすこし深部の視床下部です」
「それはどうちがうのですか？」
「それは、ひと口でいうと、第三の目というのは、霊的次元のさまざまな現象を知覚し、見聞する能力を持つ目、といったらよいでしょう。視床下部のほうはそれを動かす『場』です。それはつまり、いまわれわれが持つ普通の目と脳との関係にあると思ったしょう」

「視床下部がなぜ霊性の『場』であるかについて、わたくしは、『密教・超能力の秘密』で、生理学と、ホルモン分泌学と、酵素薬理学の三つの面から解明しています。この視床下部が第三の目と連繋して活動するとき、人間は霊性を顕現するのです。その究極において、『密教・超能力の秘密』でいっているように、カミ、ホトケにまで到達するのです。人間は、知性・理性の場である新皮質と、本能の座である辺縁系の中間にある『間脳』に、霊性の場を持っていたのです。これにより、人間はバランスがとれるのです。ところが、この間脳にある霊性の場を、人間は失ってしまった」

「古代密教、とおっしやるのはどういうわけですか？」
「後世の密教は、大乗仏教の影響をうけて、シャカがつたえたシステムを様式化してしまったのです。まったくちがったものにしてしまった」

「しかし、仏像とか、仏画とかは、古代密教の表象をそのままつたえています。密教の仏像の多くが、第三の目を持っているのはこのためです」
「あの、眉間のところにある目ですね？」
「そうです。その密教の代表ともいうべき仏像が、摩醗首羅です。これは、梵語の
（マヘーシュバラ）を音写したもので、これを『大自在天』と漢訳し、宇宙の大主宰神とされております。眉間に第三の目があって、合計、三つの目を持っています。われわれは、目が二つです。その二つの目の一つは、辺緑系の脳に通ずる目であり、もう一つは新皮質の脳に通ずる目で、この二つが一対になって、現象世界（物質世界）を見るのです。このほかに、じつはもう一つの目があった。それは間脳の視床下部の脳に通ずる霊性の目で、霊的世界を見る目です。これが、第三のとよばれるものなのです」
「で、その第三の目が、『残跡』となると同時に、先生のおっしゃる霊性の『場』もはたらかなくなってしまったということですか？」
「そうですね、しかし、それは、霊性の『場』が閉ざされてはたらかなくなってしまったから、第三の目もはたらかなくなって、たんなる『残痕』になってしまったのだともいえるでしょう。要するに、密接な相関関係にあるものですからＩＬ

新皮質が生か知性は、時実博士の表現によれば『より良く生きる』ことと、『より高く生きる』（六四ページ挿図参照）ことを目ざします。そのための創造行動をいとなみます。その結果、どういうものが生み出されたかといいますと、精神的には、哲学（および倫理・道徳）、物質的には科学（と技術）です。ことばを変えていうと、『より良く生きる』が科学と技術を生み出し、『より高く生きる』が哲学・倫理を生み出した。ところが、哲学・倫理はいままったく行きづまって、
人類がいまかかえる問題に、大声で１ 告は発するけれども、なんの答も出すことができない。
一方、新皮質の『より良く生きる』という目標は、『より便利に』『より速く』の追求なりでしまった。ごらんなさい。現代社会は、新皮質文明であり、新皮質の産物ですが、現代社会の目標は、『より便利に』『より速く』がモ。トーでしょう。地球上のすべての企業が、それを目ざして狂父のごとく活動しています。それが結局は自分の首をしめることを新皮質は知りながら、止めることができない。なぜならば、それをおしとどめる間脳のはたらき、霊性の『場』を、はるか以前に、新皮質自身が押さえこんでしまっていたのです」「そんなことがあり得るのですか？」
「こういう現象は、大脳においてつねにおこなわれるものです。たとえば、動物が高等になるにつれて新皮質が発達してくるために、旧皮質はしだいに大脳半球の底面へ押しやられ、古皮質は大脳半球内部へ押しこまれるようになります。これは大脳生理学の定説で、これとおなじ現象が、人間の大脳においておこなわれたのです。
新皮質は、それが人類の進歩と進化であり、平和と繁栄につながるのだという大義名分のもとに、間脳を押さえこんでしまったのです。そういう理くつを考え出すのは、新皮質の得意ちゅうの得意ですから
霊性とは物質的な欲望や本能を制御し、時には否定さえして、より崇高なるものにあこがれる精神領域だと、さきにわたくしは中しましたが、そういうものは、新皮質の生み出す物質文化にブレーキをかけるものです。考えようによっては、新皮質の敵といっていい。だから、新皮質は全力をあげて、霊性の場を押しつぶしにかかった。人間のすべての欲望（大脳辺緑系）がこれにくわわった。これが、人間の『業』というものでしょう。
だから、知性と称するものは、霊性、霊的なものを、いまでも、迷信といって敵視するでし。う。知性の持ちぬしだと自称するひとたちが、『霊』ということばを聞くと、たちまち歯をむき
出して噛みついてくるのは、そのためです」

「インドではもっと古く、紀元前一〇〇〇年、すなわち、前十世紀にすでに『リグヴェーダ』が成立しています。前八世紀にはバラモン教が活動しはじめています。前七世紀には『ウパニシャッド』が完成し、前五五六年にはシャカが生まれていますＬ
