The power of Kannon Bodhisattva, described in the Kannon Sutra, is known as a miraculous power that saves people from all kinds of hardships. Specifically, it is said that it saves people from various hardships, such as fire, drowning, injuries caused by swords and weapons, demons and evil spirits, and even freedom from criminals and prisons. It is also said that Kannon Bodhisattva changes his form and appears in all kinds of places to save people.
The Kannon Sutra (Fumonbon) teaches that by believing in Kannon Bodhisattva and chanting his name, one can be saved from all kinds of hardships.
The “miraculous power” in the Kannon Sutra is specifically said to appear as the following benefits:
Salvation from various hardships, such as fire, drowning, rakshasas, swords and sticks, demons, shackles, and enemies:
It is believed that these hardships can be avoided or alleviated by believing in Kannon Bodhisattva.
I (Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara) again asked the Buddha, who had a very noble appearance (myozo).
“Why do you call that bodhisattva (son of Buddha) Kannon (Avalokitesvara)?”
The Buddha answered me with a poem (verse).
“Listen carefully to how Bodhisattva Kannon answers people’s wishes anytime, anywhere.
The bodhisattva’s original vow (great vow) is deeper than the ocean, and even if you spend an infinite amount of time, it cannot be imagined.
He made this pure wish by serving countless Buddhas.
I will briefly explain to you again about Bodhisattva Kannon.”
Hear the name of Bodhisattva Kannon, worship his form, and think of him in your heart.
If you do this and do not spend your time in vain, you will surely be freed from all suffering.
Even if you are thrown into a fire because of ill will, if you think of Kannon, the pit of fire will turn into a pond.
Or, even if you are adrift on the ocean and the waves are raging, if you remember Kannon, you will not be drowned by the waves.
Or, even if you are thrown off the peak of a high mountain (Sumeru), if you remember Kannon, you will float in the air like the sun.
Or, even if you are chased by evil people and pushed off Mount Kongo, if you remember Kannon, you will not be injured.
Or, even if you are surrounded by thieves and bandits and are stabbed with swords, if you remember Kannon, they will feel compassion for you.
Or, even if you are sentenced to death by tyranny, if you remember Kannon, the sword will suddenly break.
Or, even if you are imprisoned and tortured by handcuffs and shackles, if you remember Kannon, you will be freed from this suffering.
Even if you are put in danger by curses or poison, if you remember Kannon, the person who performed the curse will suffer more.
Or even if you encounter a rakshasa, a poisonous dragon, or a demon, if you think of Kannon, you will not be harmed.
Even if you are surrounded by wild beasts, their fangs and claws terrifying, if you think of Kannon, they will run away somewhere.
Even if you are attacked by a poisonous snake or viper, which spits flaming poison, if you think of Kannon, they will turn around and run away as you chant the name of Kannon.
Even if thunder roars and hail falls, if you think of Kannon, they will immediately calm down.
Even when people suffer difficulties and disasters and are unable to bear the suffering, the wisdom of Kannon Bodhisattva can surely save them from the suffering of this world.
Kannon Bodhisattva can appear anywhere by using the expedient means of his supernatural powers and vast wisdom.
The various worlds of suffering, such as the hell realm, the hungry ghost realm, the animal realm, and even the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, and death, will gradually disappear (if you think of Kannon).
Kannon Bodhisattva sees the truth and watches over all people with a pure mind, vast wisdom, and compassion.
Always think of Kannon and always look up to and respect Kannon Bodhisattva.
The sun of wisdom, with its pure and pure light, will break through the darkness of all suffering, extinguish the winds and fires of disaster, and brightly illuminate the world at large.
The precepts, which are the form of compassion, are like thunder, and a compassionate heart is like a beautiful, great cloud that brings down rain of teachings and extinguishes the fires of worldly desires.
Even if you are afraid of arguing in court or of your enemy on the battlefield, if you think of Kannon, all of your enemy’s resentment will disappear. The wonderful voice of Kannon Bodhisattva is pure, like the ebb and flow of the ocean tides, and surpasses all sounds in the world.
Therefore, always remember.
Remember. Always remember. Do not allow doubt to arise.
The pure power of Kannon Bodhisattva is a refuge from all suffering and at the time of death.
Endowed with all virtues, he watches over people with a gaze of compassion, and the collection of happiness is as limitless as the ocean.
Therefore, worship with modesty.
At that time, Jizo Bodhisattva (Jiji Bodhisattva) stood up and stepped forward, thanking the Buddha.
“Buddha, if people heard the free-flowing workings and supernatural powers of the Kannon Sutra, they would know.
That his merits are immeasurable.”
When the Buddha preached the Kannon Sutra, all those gathered there were awakened to the highest level of enlightenment.
