覚王山日泰寺は日本で唯一、どこの宗派にも属さない寺院で、現在のタイ（泰）国、当時の暹羅（シャム）国から拝受した釈尊の真骨を奉安するために開山されました。開山にあたって全国の仏教宗派の代表が集まり寺院建立候補地を協議をしましたが決定に難渋し、名古屋市民が10万坪の敷地を用意したことから当地に開山されることになったそうです。覚王山日泰寺の山号は釈尊を表した覚王山、寺号は日本国と泰国との親善を象徴する日泰寺となっており、開山当時の寺号は日暹寺となっていました。

タイ国宝である御本尊「金銅釈迦如来像」を拝む

覚王山日泰寺の御本尊は、日泰寺開山のために暹羅（シャム）国国宝となっている釈尊金銅佛を、当時の国王から下賜されたものです。本堂内にはタイ語で「釈迦牟尼仏」と記されたタイ国プミポン前国王直筆の勅額が掲げられ、勅額にはプミポン前国王と御本尊を下賜（かし）されたチュラロンコン陛下の紋章がしるされています。本堂内には須弥壇両側に高山辰雄画伯による釈尊の大壁画や、それぞれの国に馴染みの深いタイの「蘭（ラン）」、日本の「菊」を題材にした金子鷗亭師による書一対などがあります。

散策しながら御真骨が収められている「奉安塔」に参拝する

覚王山日泰寺境内の北東方向には、釈尊の真骨が安置された奉安塔のための境内があります。境内奥に位置している奉安塔は高さ15mの花崗岩で造られたガンダーラ様式の塔で、2階部分に釈尊の真骨が収められた真舎利が安置されています。こちらの境内には奉安塔のほかに、奉安塔の礼拝施設となっている舎利殿や奉安塔前の礼拝殿などがあります。広々とした雰囲気のある日泰寺本殿境内から覚王山の町を散策して、市街地の中にありながら緑に囲まれた奉安塔境内への散策はいかがでしょうか？

覚王山日泰寺の境内北側には曹洞宗の認可を受けている日泰寺専門僧堂があります。専門僧堂とは僧として出家したものが修行のために安居する場です。日泰寺専門僧堂は静岡県にある可睡斎専門僧堂の分僧堂として、日泰寺の日常的な寺院の運営を支える奉仕僧が安居・修行するために設けられ現在に至っています。専門僧堂では奉仕僧の修行だけでなく高僧による公開講座が行われていて、僧俗・一般にかかわらず参加することができますので、僧侶の方といっしょに机を並べたり、宿泊したり（要僧堂へ申込時相談）するという体験ができます。

それでも、お釈迦様は一言も言い返すことなく、黙ってその男の悪態を聞いていました。

男は、一方的にお釈迦様の悪口を言い続けて疲れたのか、しばらく後、その場にへたりこんでしまいました。

どんな悪口を言っても、お釈迦様は一言も言い返さないので、なんだか虚しくなってしまったのです。

その様子を見て、お釈迦様は、静かにその男にたずねました。

「もし他人に贈り物をしようとして、その相手が受け取らなかった時、その贈り物は一体誰のものだろうか」

こう聞かれた男は、突っぱねるように言いました。

「そりゃ、言うまでもない。相手が受け取らなかったら贈ろうとした者のものだろう。わかりきったことを聞くな」

男はそう答えてからすぐに、「あっ」と気づきました。

お釈迦様は静かにこう続けられました。

「そうだよ。今、あなたは私のことをひどくののしった。でも、私はそのののしりを少しも受け取らなかった。だから、あなたが言ったことはすべて、あなたが受け取ることになるんだよ」

“That goes without saying. If the other person didn’t receive it, he would be the one who tried to give it.

Immediately after answering that, the man noticed “Ah”.

Buddha quietly continued like this.

“That’s right. Now you’ve terribly cursed me, but I didn’t receive any of that curse, so everything you say will be received by you.”
