瑠璃の光の誓い Lapis Lazuli Promise
東方の空が薄明るく染まり始める頃、浄瑠璃世界の光が静かに広がっていた。その中心に佇むのは、薬師瑠璃光如来――人々から「薬師如来」と尊ばれる仏様であった。その名は、サンスクリット語で「バイシャジヤグル」とも呼ばれ、病を癒し、苦しみを解き放つ慈悲の象徴として知られていた。
薬師如来は、右手に施無畏印を結び、左手には与願印を結んでいた。その左手の掌には、小さな薬壺が乗せられており、その中にはあらゆる病を癒す妙薬が詰まっていると伝えられていた。その姿は、病に苦しむ者、貧しさに喘ぐ者、心の闇に囚われた者たちに、希望の光を投げかけるかのようだった。
「オン・コロコロ・センダリ・マトウギ・ソワカ」
そのご真言は、風に乗って遠くまで響き渡り、聞く者の心に安らぎをもたらした。この真言を唱えることで、病は癒され、心身は浄化され、平和が訪れると信じられていた。人々は、その言葉に救いを求め、薬師如来の名を繰り返し唱えた。
薬師如来は、東方浄瑠璃世界の教主として、十二の大願を立てていた。その願いの一つは、「いかなる病も、いかなる医者も治せないものであっても、薬師如来の名を聞いた者は、必ずその病から解放される」というものだった。その誓願は、人々の深い信仰を集め、仏教が日本に伝えられた初期から、多くの宗派で本尊として祀られていた。
日光菩薩と月光菩薩が脇に控え、十二神将が護法神として守護する中、薬師如来は静かに微笑んでいた。その微笑みは、すべての生きとし生けるものに健康と長寿をもたらすと信じられていた。
ある日、一人の青年が遠い村から如来のもとを訪れた。彼の名は蓮司（れんじ）。長年の病に苦しむ母を救うため、はるばるこの聖地までたどり着いたのだ。
「薬師如来さま……どうか母をお救いください」
涙ながらに蓮司は祈った。病に倒れ、医者も匙を投げた母。その衰弱する姿を見るたびに、蓮司の胸は締めつけられるようだった。
すると、如来の手のひらにある薬壺が淡い光を放った。それは瑠璃色の輝きとなって蓮司を包み込む。そして、静かなる声が響いた。
「オン・コロコロ・センダリ・マトウギ・ソワカ」
その言葉はまるで優しい波のように蓮司の心に浸透し、深く沈んでいた不安が少しずつ和らいでいくのを感じた。
「汝の母の苦しみは、必ず取り除かれよう。だが、病を癒すのは薬だけではない。汝の信と願いが、彼女を生かす力となるのだ」
蓮司は涙を拭い、しっかりとうなずいた。そして、如来の導きを胸に、母のもとへと帰っていった。
それから幾日も経たぬうちに、母の容態は奇跡のように回復し、再び笑顔を見せるようになった。蓮司はその姿を見て、心の底から感謝した。
薬師如来の瑠璃の光は、いつの世も絶えることなく、人々の病と苦しみを静かに癒し続ける。
A Promise of Lapis Lazuli Light
–Far to the east, in the Pure Land shining with lapis lazuli light, a single Buddha stood. His name was Medicine Buddha Lazuli Light Buddha.
His right hand made the fearless mudra, and in his left hand he gently held a medicine jar. The medicine jar had the power to heal all worldly illnesses. He quietly raised his twelve great vows and vowed to relieve people of suffering.
One day, a young man visited the Buddha from a faraway village. His name was Renji. He had traveled all the way to this holy land to save his mother, who had been suffering from a long-standing illness.
“Medicine Buddha… please save my mother.”
Renji prayed in tears. His mother had fallen ill and the doctors had given up. Every time he saw her weakened state, Renji’s heart tightened.
Then, the medicine jar in the Buddha’s palm emitted a faint light. It became a lapis lazuli glow that enveloped Renji. Then, a quiet voice rang out.
“On korokoro sendari matougi sowaka.”
These words penetrated Renji’s heart like gentle waves, and he felt the deep anxiety gradually ease.
“Your mother’s suffering will surely be removed. However, medicine alone will not heal her illness. Your faith and prayer will be the power that keeps her alive.”
Renji wiped away his tears and nodded firmly. Then, with the Buddha’s guidance in his heart, he returned to his mother.
A few days later, his mother’s condition miraculously improved, and she began to smile again. Renji was grateful from the bottom of his heart when he saw her.
The lapis lazuli light of Medicine Buddha continues to quietly heal people’s illnesses and suffering, without ceasing in any era.
