仏陀の超能力
サヘト マヘトへ(地名)
スラバスティの大長者スダッタ(須達多)が、仏陀のために大金を投じてここに土地を求め、大精舎を建立した。 仏陀の名声は四方につたわり、教えを乞うもの踵を接した。 この附近には、ジャイナ教その他の外道の寺院がたくさんあった。それらの寺院の指 導者たちは、仏陀の名声をねたみ、いろいろ、仏陀を中傷した。 中でもとくに、 仏陀を口のうまい山師にすぎないといいふらした。口さきで理論を説くだけで、なに一 神通力を持っていない、要するに口舌の徒であるという批難であった。当時のインド の宗教界では、指導者となるためには、なんらかの神通力を持つことが必須の条件と されていた。ところが、仏陀は、無用に神通力をあらわすことをきらって、この地に来 てから一度もその力を示すことがなかったのである。
他の教団の指導者たちは、これを、仏陀にその力がないからだと考え、これを攻撃し たわけである。仏陀が大神通力の持ちぬしであることを知っている高弟たちは、一度、 ぜひその力を示されるようおねがいしたが、仏陀は承知されなかった。いよいよ神通力 などないと思いあがった他教団の指導者たちは、自分たちのパトロンである他の長者や 勢力者たちを通じて、スダックに、仏陀と神通力の試合を申し入れた。負けたほうがこ の地を去るという条件である。 スダックもついにことわりきれず、仏陀に試合をし
た。あるいは、スダッタも仏陀の神通力を見たかったのかも知れない。仏陀もスダッタ の立場を考慮され、ついにこれを承諾された。
その日、他の教団の指導者たちが、これみよがしにさまざまな神通力を競い合ったさ いごに、仏陀がすがたをあらわされた。
仏陀は三層の高楼の露台にそのおすがたをあらわされたのである。いかなる神通力を あらわされるのかと群衆が固唾をのんで見守るなか、なんと仏陀は露台の手すりを無 作に乗り越えられ、空中に足を踏み出されたのである。一瞬、手をはなされる。仏陀墜 落! とみるまに、仏陀はそのままゆっくりと空中浮揚して、庭園にむらがる大衆の 頭上を越え、 きよらかな清水をたたえた庭園の池の上に立たれたのである。微風に小波 をたてる清涼池の水の上に、仏陀はしずかに立っておられるのである。 群衆が思わずわ が目をうたがったつぎの瞬間、仏陀の上半身は火炎となって燃えあがり、下半身は玉の ような水と化したのである。
目のあたりに見る大神通力に、なみいる他教団の指導者や、土地の勢力者をはじめ、 すべてのひとびとはその場にひれ伏して、頭をあげ得なかった。
Buddha’s supernatural powers

The great elder Sudatta of Sravasti invested a large sum of money in order to acquire land for the Buddha, and built a large temple here. The fame of the Buddha spread in all directions, and those who sought his teachings came to him. There were many temples of Jainism and other heretical religions in the vicinity. The leaders of these temples were jealous of the Buddha’s fame and slandered him in various ways. In particular, they spread the word that the Buddha was nothing more than a smooth-talking charlatan. They criticized him for only preaching theories with his mouth and not having any supernatural powers, in other words, for being a man of words. In the religious world of India at that time, it was considered essential to have some kind of supernatural power in order to become a leader. However, the Buddha was reluctant to show his supernatural powers unnecessarily, and he never showed them since coming to this place.
The leaders of other religious orders thought that this was because the Buddha did not have the power, and attacked him. The disciples, who knew that the Buddha possessed great supernatural powers, asked him to demonstrate his powers once, but the Buddha refused. The leaders of other religious orders, who were increasingly arrogant and believed that the Buddha did not have supernatural powers, asked Sudhak, through their patrons, other wealthy people and powerful people, to challenge the Buddha to a supernatural contest. The condition was that the loser would have to leave the land. Sudhak could not refuse at last, and challenged the Buddha to a contest. Perhaps Sudatta also wanted to see the supernatural powers of the Buddha. The Buddha, taking Sudatta’s position into consideration, finally agreed.
That day, after the leaders of other religious orders had ostentatiously competed against each other in various supernatural powers, the Buddha appeared.
The Buddha appeared on the terrace of a three-story building. While the crowd watched with bated breath, wondering what supernatural powers he would display, the Buddha suddenly climbed over the railing of the terrace and stepped into the air. In an instant, his hands were released. “Buddha falls!” they thought. The Buddha then slowly rose into the air, flying over the heads of the crowd gathered in the garden, and stood on the garden’s pond, which was filled with pure, clear water. The Buddha stood quietly on the refreshing water of the pond, which rippled in the gentle breeze. The crowd was dumbfounded, and in that moment, the upper half of the Buddha’s body burst into flames and the lower half turned into a ball of water. The great supernatural power they witnessed caused all the people, including the leaders of other religious groups and local powerful people, to kneel down on the spot and be unable to lift their heads.
佛陀的神通

舍卫城的善达多长老为了给佛陀征地，投入了巨额资金，并在此修建了一座大寺庙。佛陀的名声传遍四方，求道者纷纷前来。附近有许多耆那教和其他异端教派的寺庙。这些寺庙的领袖们嫉妒佛陀的名声，用各种方式诽谤他。特别是，他们散布说佛陀不过是一个花言巧语的江湖骗子。他们批评他只用嘴巴宣扬理论，没有任何神通，换句话说，他是一个言而无信的人。在当时的印度宗教界，要想成为领袖，拥有某种神通被认为是必不可少的事情。然而，佛陀不愿意不必要地展示他的神通，自从来到这个地方后，他就再也没有展示过。
其他宗教领袖认为这是因为佛陀没有神通，就攻击他。弟子们知道佛陀有大神通，就要求他展示一次神通，但佛陀拒绝了。其他宗教领袖越来越傲慢，认为佛陀没有神通，他们通过他们的赞助人，其他富人和有权势的人，要求苏达克向佛陀挑战神通比赛。条件是失败者必须离开这个国家。苏达克最后无法拒绝，向佛陀挑战。也许苏达多也想见识一下佛陀的神通。佛陀考虑到苏达多的立场，最终同意了。

佛陀出现在一栋三层楼的露台上。就在众人屏息凝神，好奇佛祖又将施展什么神通之时，佛祖突然翻过露台的栏杆，踏空而起。一瞬间，双手松开。众人心想：“佛祖倒下了！”佛祖缓缓升空，飞过花园众人的头顶，站在花园的池塘上，池塘里满是清澈纯净的水。佛祖静静地站在清凉的水面上，水面在微风的吹拂下荡漾。众人目瞪口呆，就在这时，佛祖的上半身突然燃起熊熊的火焰，下半身化作一团水球。他们所见的神通之力，让包括其他宗教团体的领袖和当地有权势的人在内的所有人都跪倒在地，抬不起头来。
