聖語としての梵字の歴史
まず、梵字、梵語、悉曇、サンスクリット、種子、梵字仏、文字仏など、本書に出てくる梵字
に関する用語を整理しておきましょう。ともすると混乱することかおりますから、正しく理解し
ておくことが大切です。
古代よりインドで使われている言語「サンスクリョト」を「梵語」といいます。この梵語を記
すときに用いる文字が「梵字」です。梵字の書体は時代とともに変化しましたが、ふつう日本で
梵字といえば、その中の一書体である「悉曇梵字」をさします。

梵語（実際は梵語方言のプラークリット語）が使われていますが、なかにはギリシヤ語やアラム
語（当時の西アジア世界における国際語的な言語）などでヽ記されているものも発見されている .
