将来は、この種の器械や装置を組み合せて、大またで歩いたり、重い物をかるがると持ち上げたりするだけでなく、あらゆる動作――長い距離を非常なスピードで泳いだり、一日も二日も水底を泳ぎまわったり、枝から枝へとびうつったりを、やすやすとやってのけるようになるだろう。

いう方向に研究はすすめられつつあるようである。だが、しかし、実際にはその反対のことも起こり得る可能性があるのだ。つまり、コンピューターのなかに、生体部品→腦ーをおくことだって考えられないことではないのである。それは、ヒトとキカイとの完全な合成である。人間と機械との複合結婚!、そういうものが起こりつつあるように思える。
SF作家のアイザック・アシモフは人間と機械の混血した新しい生物種ができることを予言している。すると科学におけるヒトの改造の極致は結局それなのか?そのうち、われわれは、機械化したヒトに話しかけているのか、ヒト化した機械に話しかけているのか、わからなくなる日がやってくるだろう。
あるいはまた、自分自身でさえ、そのどちらであるのかわからないというが。
かくしてホモ・サピエンスは消えてゆく。
ヒトは、自分たちがい出ほろびるという絶滅意識を持たぬまま、しずかに機械のなかに吸収されてしまうのか?あるいは、かえって、最後のホモ・サピエンスは、これほどの科学を生み出した科学者の功績をほめたたえつつ、ある日、突然、その意識を機械のなかに消してゆくのであおうか?もしもそうだとするならば、これこそまさに、一00万年のヒトの歴史と、ヒトという生物の持つすべての盾をその一瞬にかけた世紀の一大ナンセンスというべきだろう。
