森のそばにある最初の町に入ったとき、ツァラトゥストラは、町の広場に群衆が集まっているのを見た。綱渡りの見物ができると予告されていたからだ。ツァラトゥストラは群衆にむかってこう言った。 「超人というものを教えてあげよう。人間は、克服されるべき存在なのだ。君たちは人間を克服するたに、何をしてきた？ これまでの存在はみんな、自分を超える何かを創造した。君たちは、この大きな満ち潮に逆らう引き潮であろうとするのか？ 人間を克服するよりも、動物に戻ろうとするのか？ 人間にとって猿とは何か？ 物笑いの種だ。あるいは痛いほど恥ずかしいものだ。超人にとって人間もその猿と変わりがない。物笑いの種だ。あるいは痛いほど恥ずかしいものだ。
君たちは、虫から人間への道を歩いてきた。おまけに、君たちのなかにある多くのことは、まだ虫のままだ。昔、君たちは猿だった。
