怖るべき環境破壊の元凶

堕落した進歩

　―人間が、知識と力を、ばかげた使いかたをするからといって、科学と技術自体にその責任

があるわけではない、と、フランスの著名な生理学者ルネーデュボスは、その著「目覚める理

性」で科学と技術をおだやかに、そう弁護しながら、

　「しかし」

　といっている。

　『化学者と機械技術者は、人問生活を変えてしまう各種の新しい素材、方法を、なんの疑問もも

たぬままつくり出す。人間は、こうした変化に適応すると一般に考えられているが、実際は、人

間の適応能力には限界かおる。人間の適応能力の限界と範囲についてわかっていることはすくな

い。いずれにせよ、われわれは、社会的、技術的変化を、ぜがひでもと望んでうけいれているの

ではないことはたしかである。イオン化放射線と大気、食物、水などの環境汚染は、ひじょうに

緩慢に有害作用をあらわすことは、ひろく認識されている。それは、暗闇にしのびよる悪疫のよ

うである。同じように人びとが慣れてしまったように見える社会的、技術的革新の多くが、つい

には人間生活をだめにしてしまう。適応能力の現実的限界は、ある限られた期間、なにに耐えら

れるかによってきまるのではなく、将来、どんな結果が生ずるかによってきまるのである。こう

した諸影響こそ、どかな革新が安全で望ましいかを決定するとき、考慮されねばならぬ本質的な

因子である』

　ときめつけ、さらに、

　『ニューヨーク科学アカデミーの一五〇周年記念学会で発表された論文のひとつは、人工心肺装

置にかんするものだった。今日、心臓外科と心臓移植が、医学会、ジャーナリズムで脚光をあび

ているおりでもあり、まことに時宜を得たことである。人工臓器の開発と、臓器移植の外科学

的、免疫学的研究がさらに発展することは疑いない。しかし、そうした人工臓器と外科的手段を

不必要とするような生活法を究明することは、同じく科学的に興味があるし、社会的にはるかに

有益であろう。適当な条件のもとでは、人間の心臓は、おそらく、すくなくともＩ〇〇年間は十

分機能できる。一般に、血管系の疾患、とくに心臓病の増加の原因となっている現在の生活方法

と環境のなかの諸因子を究明することは、予防の方が治療よりもはるかに効果的で、費用もやす

く、多くの人びとに利用できるという理由からだけでも、医学研究において、特に重要である』

　と皮肉っている。

　しかし、事態はどうやら皮肉っていて済むような状態ではないようである。

　「事物が鞍の上にいて人類を乗りこなしている」

　といったのは、たしか、ラルフーワイドーエマーソンであるが、最初、人類が乗りこなしてい

た科学と技術という事物が、（進歩）しているうちに、いつのまにか、気がついてみたら逆にな

っていたのである。

（進歩）とはなにか？

「いまや、（進歩）ということぼけ堕落してしまった」

　とルネーデュボスは、なげきっっするどく警告する。

『それは、いまや、おおむね（生活水準）の変化を意味するものとして使われ、生活の内容では

なく物品の豊富さをあらわすものになった。（進歩）は、さらにいっそう高い教育、さらに洗練

された趣味、よりよい健康を意味するものではなくなり、人びとがいかに多くの工業製品を所有

できるか、国家がどれだけ多くの破壊兵器を所有するか、あるいは、せいぜい国家がいかに多く

の宇宙船を軌道にのせ、他の天体にもっていけるかを意味するものとなってしまった。科学の力

が増大するにつれ、その用途は高貴さを失ってますますつまらなくなり、野蛮になり、無道徳に

さえなることが多くなった。このような科学的業績の堕落の責任すべてが、科学者にあるわけで

はないが、われわれはそれを防ぐにはあまりに努力がたりなかった。われわれは、科学を、いわ

ば、商売繁昌と商品の増産だけに駈り立て、われとわが理想土畏切ったのである。科学の技術的

応用、あるいは、その他の実際的応用が乱用されすぎてきた。物品の生産と（技術）と称される

ものの開発だけが、科学者の社会になしうるもっとも価値ある貢献ではなかろう。おそらく、も

っと有用なことは、社会進化の結果もたらされた諸問題を、人間が客観的、合理的、創造的に判

断するのに役だつ知識と考えかたをきづくことだろう。ところが、こうした方面の科学は、大学

においても研究所においても、まったく無視されているのではないにしても、ひじょうに低く評

価されている。学者と技術者は、われわれは科学の時代にいるのだとはこらしげに述べ立ててい

る。ところが、これが実際に意味しているのは、人類の真の必要度をかえりみないで、世界の天

然資源をせっせと開発していることであり、また、幸福というものをすこしも考えないで、二、

三の肉体と精神の病気を治療ナることである』（傍点は著者）

　と痛烈にやっつけ、ついに、

　『産業社会がますます多くの人びとのために、過去一世紀にわたって増大させてきたのと同じテ

ンポであらゆる物の生産を、ますます拡大しつづけていくなら、もはや破滅がおとずれることは

避けられないと、多くの科学者や一般市民とおなじように、私は確信するようになった。技術量

的拡大が、やがて終末をむかえるだろうと私に信じさせる理由を、独断的ではあるが、いくっか

あげよう』

　といって三つの理由をあげ、（理性はめざめた）しかし、大勢におくれすぎた感がある！」

　と絶望の声をあげている。

の結果、生活がそこなわれたことはたびたびある。環境汚染、とくに、騒音による神経の強い緊

張、公共サーヴィスの漸次低下、プライヴァシーの侵犯、社会的画一化の増大などは、技術、す

くなくとも、その誤用から生じた現代生活の悲しむべき側面のほんの二、三の例に過ぎない

安のもっとも大きな原因は、科学的知識が、過去において人間がよってたっていた伝統的価値を

弱め、崩壊させたが、その代わりとなる新しい倫理体系を提供していないことにある。知識は、

粗雑な誤りと麻鋸的恐怖から人間を解放したが、物質的存在に精神的愉悦を織りこむ信念を人間

にあたえなかった。これまでもしばしばいわれてきているように、科学は、人回に生きる糧をあ

たえるが、生きる目的をあたえはしないのである』（傍点著者）

　　おなじことを、アメリカ博物学会会長で、また人類遺伝学の分野で著名な研究者ベットレーグ

ラス教授がいっている。彼は、「人類はその知識を自己増殖のコットローールや未来の進化に適用

しているので、きわめて近い将来、人類は驚くべき倫理上の問題に直面するであろう」といい、

イギリスのノーベル賞受賞者フランシスークリックは、「生物学の進歩は、倫理体系や信仰の伝

統的背景を急速に破壊しつつある。しかも、そのかわりにそこに何をおくべきかを見出していな

い」と指摘している。

　問題はこれだと私は思う。ここに問題かおる。

　科学と技術が、人類にとって神であるか、悪魔であるか、それを解く鍵はここにあると私は思

うのだ。

　生きる糧をあたえても、生きる目的をあたえないものは、そのあたえる糧がいかにすばらしい

ものであっても、それは神ではないと私は思う。そういうものは、たとえどんな繁栄や安楽を約

束してくれても、それはぜったい神にはなり得ない。神とは生きる目的と意義をあたえてくれる

ものではなければならない。

　だがＩ、それにしても、科学と技術があたえてくれるものは絢爛たるものである。その提供

するメニューは豪奢で魅力にみちている。人間に欠けているすべてのものを、科学と技術はあた

えてくれる。科学はやがてすべてを解決してくれるだろう、という考え方は、依然として根づよ

い。そういう意見を持つ人びとにむかって、Ｇ・Ｒ・ティラーは、「続・人間に未来はあるか」

のなかでこういう。

　『ピーター・メダウア上郷は、すっきりとした態度で楽観論者の側に身を置き、現在の技術につ

いての失望を、技術専門家の神話の崩壊によるものとは見ないで、単に一時的な。神経のあやま

ち″（トインビーの言葉）と見ている。技術の失敗に対する解決法は、″もっと技術を！″というこ

とである。。技術による環境の悪化は、ひとつの技術的な問題で、技術はそれに対して解決を見

つけてきたし、見つけつっあるし、今後とも見つけ出すのをやめないだろう″と。

　だが、不幸なことに、技術は、解決を見つけ出す上に、（解決を見つけ出すと同時に）もっと

多くの問題をつくリ出すということだ。重要な質問は、技術が問題をつくり出すと同じぐらいの

速さで解答を見出すかどうか、その時間のずれはどれくらいかということだ。技術が放射線を散

らす方法を見つけ出すまでには、われわれはみんな死んでしまうだろう』

　ときめつけている。

　この問題を、われわれは慎重にもう少し追ってみよう。」

アメリカ人は食用に適さない‘

「アメリ力人は、食用には適さないようだ」という冗談で、Ｇ・Ｒ・ティラーはＤＤＴのおそる

べき環境汚染について書きはじめている。アメリカ人がなぜ食用に適さぬかというと、その理由

は、アメリカ大の体の脂肪中には平均一〇Ｐｐｍ以上のＤＤＴがたまっていて、その量は純粋食

晶法で食品に許された量の二倍もあるからだ。

　もっとも、その筆法でいうならば、インド人とイスラエル人はそれ以上に煮ても焼いても食え

ない人種ということになる。なぜならば、イスラエル人は一九ＰＰｍという数字を示し、インド

人では実に二九ｐｐｍという恐るべき量に達しているからである。しかも、これらの数字は平均

値であるからインド人のなかには少なくとも五〇―六〇ＰＰｍのＤＤＴが蓄積されていることが

推察され、それは十分な致死量となっている。

　レーチェルーカーソンの著書「沈黙の　」が、世界中に爆発的にひろがった

のは一九六三年のことである。その本のなかで、彼女は新しい農薬、とりわけＤＤＴが鳥類やそ

の他のいろいろな動物に及ぼす影響を告発した。当時、彼女は実際には起こり得ぬことについて

からさわぎをしているのだと強い言葉で非難された。彼女の論文はすべて非科学的であると攻撃

された。数年たたずして彼女の主張の正しいことが認識され、いまでは、アメリカ、イギリスを

始め数ヵ国の政府が、有機塩素剤とよばれるＤＤＴを含むグループの使用制限に踏み出してい

る。（どれだけのＤＤＴが他国から風にのってやってきて汚染するか、また、この薬剤をスウェ

ーデンで使用することによって、どの程度の汚染が生じるかを明らかにするために、スウェーデ

ンでは一年間全面的に禁止した）

　いろいろな調査により、この物質は地球の生態圏のなかで一番多い汚染物質になりつつあるこ

とが明らかになった。マクマルド音響研究支所から五〇マイルも離れている北極のアザラシやペ

ンギンの脂肪のなかから、ＤＤＴが発見されたとき、科学者たちは大きなショックをうけざるを

得なかった。おそらく、そこにいた人たちによって捨てられた廃棄物が原因であろうと思われる

が、しかし、最近の調査では、南極の雪に何千トンものＤＤＴが存在していることが明らかにさ

れている。これは、大気からとりこまれたものに相違ないが、ＤＤＴは、カルバドス島の上空で

も多量にあることがさいきん確認され、これは、インド上空二万一千フィートと同じ程度の量で

ある。

　ＤＤＴは体内に残留するので、非常に微量な摂取であっても、それは次第に積み重ねられてゆ

く。そしてある日突然あなたを襲うのだ。

　この物質が持っている残留性は、もっとも恐ろしい凶暴な性格を持っている。それは、″生物

学的に濃縮”させる性質である。海のプランクトンーー魚のエサとなる目に見えないほど小さな

生物111がＩｐｐｍ吸収し、そのプランクトンを食べて生きている魚はそのＩｐｐｍのＤＤＴご

とプランクトンを体内に入れ、その魚はやがてその体内組織のなかにＩ〇ｐｐｍかそれ以上のＤ

ＤＴを持つことになる。もっと大きな魚がその小さな魚を食えばさらに濃縮され、組織ではその

濃度の数字はついにＩ〇〇Ｐｐｍかそれを越えるようになるだろう。人間がそういう食肉性の魚

を食べたら、濃縮がいちだんとすすんで、多分一〇〇〇ｐｐｍくらいになるＩ－この量は、人間

が食べた魚の量と、食事のそれぞれの品にＤＤＴがどれだけ含まれているかで決まるわけだが、

世界中で半数の人は、魚を主なクンパク源としてとっているので、これはまことに重大なことで

ある。そうして、こういう、プランクトンー魚―食肉動物－人間という一巡の関係は″食物連

鎖″としてよく知られているところであるが、もうひとつの食物連鎖は、藻Ｉ昆虫―鳥―人間で

ある。

　ＤＤＴは予想外ないろいろな場所、たとえば腐葉土のような有機物の屑のなかとか、ゆっくり

流れる川の肥えた沈泥にたまっている。一九六九年、チャールズーウルスターと共同研究者たち

は、ＤＤＴ言ｒこをふくむ食肉魚をシオフ子

をやってみた。このエサをＩ〇日間食べただけで、シオマネキの手足の動きはバラバラになり、

のろくなった。殺して調べてみると、この短期間に、ＤＤＴの量が三倍になっていた。このこと

から、なぜこのシオマネキがここＩ〇年ほどの間に各地の川の湿地から急速に姿を消してしまっ

たかの説明がはっきりつく。

　また、ＤＤＴは、鳥の卵を生む能力に作用して鳥の数を減らしていることが明らかになった。

　過去一五年間に、多くの種類の捕食鳥類の数が減った。とくに著しいのはハヤブサだった。も

ちろん、他の多くの種も影響をうけた。たとえば、一九六九年カリフォルニアの褐色ペリカンは

繁殖力をほとんど失なった。なんと！　その卵はへこんでいたのである。

　五〇年むかしにさかのげって博物館にある鳥類の卵を調べたところ、一九四〇年代後半までは、

ほぼ一様の厚さであったのに、それから以後、急速に薄くなりはじめた。卵のなかのＤＤＥ（体

内でＤＤＴはＤＤＥまたはＤＤＤとして知られる類似物質に変る傾向があり、この三つは科学用

語で″ＤＤＴと代謝中間体″として知られている）の量が、卵の厚さと見事な関係にあることも

分った。つまり、ＤＤＥが多くなると卵のカラが薄くなるのだ。パトクセントの野生生物研究

センターのルシルースティッケルの研究報告によると、ＤＤＴとその代謝中間体を三ｐｐｍ、マ

ガモにあたえて飼育した結果、卵のカラが普通のよりこ∵五八Ｉセントも薄いばかりでなく、

ヒビが入ったり割れたりした卵が六倍もあり、生き残った子ガモは見こみ数の半分以下だった。

　ところで、それでは、ＤＤＴはいったい人間にどのような実害をあたえるのだろうか。どうや

らそれはアメリカ人やインド人をわれわれの献立表に載せることを断念する、といった程度のもＤＤＴは発ガン性物質

　レーチェルーカーソンが本を書いたころ、多量のＤＤＴが人体に及ぼす影響についてはあまり

わかっていなかった。ところが、一九四五年、ホールデンのような英雄的好奇心を持ったある

たしたことから明らかになっイギリスの研究所の一研究員が、ＤＤＴり入った水に数分間、手をひたした

ギリスの研究所のた・彼は、何事も起こらなかったのでヽ多少ＤＤＴを加えた化学変化を起こさない練り物を数分

間、手でこねまわした。

　その結果をビンセントーウイッグルスワース卿がこう書いている。

　″翌日からＩ〇日後までは、体が重たい感じで、手足に痛みが広がり、足が弱ってくる。患者は

極度の神経緊張のけいれんを起こした。このころ一日仕事の休みをとると、少しよくなったが、

仕事につけば容態は悪化し、手足の痛みがずっとつづいたので、約三週向後には患者はベッドに

入った。ほとんど眠れず、極度の神経緊張がますますひんぱんになり、激しい精神不安の状態が

あらわれた。ベッドに入ったきりになって約六週間後、不随意筋のふるえが全身に起こった。一

〇一一四日後、手足の痛みは激しかったが、患者はベッドから起きた。回復はきわめておそかっ

た。その人は結局一〇週間、仕事を離れていた。一年の終りになっても完全に回復してはいなかった“

　こういう出来事や、動物実験によって、ＤＤＴはおそらく小脳を通って、高次の運動中枢に影

響し、脳に影響を及ぼす物質であるということが分ってきた。今のわれわれならよく知っている

ことだが、ＤＤＴは、もっとつよい影響をあたえる。神経刺激の伝達を止めるのだ。おまけにそ

の影響は元へもどらない。錯乱、妄想、記憶喪失、噪病……ｙ』れらは精神病の症状である。ＤＤ

Ｔは、あなたを永久に気ちがいにしてしまう物質であるといっても言い過ぎではない。

　しかし、それがＤＤＴのもたらすすべてではないのである。

　科学者たちが驚いたことに、一九五七年、ＤＤＴが肝臓酵素（体内の反応過程を制御ナる物質）

をつくらせることがわかった。これらの酵素は、性ホルモンの発情ホルモン物質、黄体ホルモッ

物質、雄性ホルモン物質を制御することもわかった。（黄体ホルモン物質は避妊剤のカギとなる

成分である）このことを立証したバローズ・ウエルカム会社のリチャードーウェルチは、もっと

驚くべき事実さえも偶然に見つけた。ＤＤＴそのものが活性発情ホルモンの働きをすることだっ

た。適当な量のＤＤＴで鳥に生殖力減退が起こったということは、人間についても十分おこり得

る。このようにＤＤＴは直接的な神経毒であったばかりか、まだあまり明瞭ではないが、生殖能

力にも影響をあたえるのである、

　そして、まだ、それだけではないのだ

　今日では、ＤＤＴは発ガン性物質であることがかなりはっきりしている。

　一九四七年けじめ、アメリカ食品医薬品局が行なった研究で、ＤＤＴをネズミにあたえると肝

臓腫瘍がふえたが、その実験結果はまだそれほど人目につかなかった。当時ＤＤＴはマラリア退

治の奇跡の武器だったので、だれも、ＤＤＴに対しての不都合なことには耳をかたむけなかった

のである。それからちょうど二〇年後、アメリカの研究チームが、ＤＤＴ入りのエサを食べたマ

スが、異常に肝臓腫瘍の増加を示したというニュースを発表した。つづいて二年後、ハッガリー

の科学者が、三ＰｐｍＤＤＴの入ったエサを摂っていた一千匹以上のハツカネズミを、五世代以

上にわたって調べた結果を発表した。きれいなエサを食べたハツカネズミは、その四パーセント

足らずが腫瘍にかかったのに対し、’このハツカネズミは約二九八Ｉセットがかかった。さらに第

一グループの白血病の割合は、第二グループの五倍たった。このときまでに、声望のある国立ガ

ン研究所が協同して、大がかりな決定的研究をもとに、肝臓、肺臓リンパ腺の腫瘍の頻度が四倍

になっていると報告した。このガンは、発ガン性物質によって発生するガッと同じ種類で、発生

頻度もほぼ同したった。結論は明らかであった。ＤＤＴはハツカネズミにとっては発ガッ性物質

だったのである。

　しかし、このことは、ＤＤＴが人間の発ガン性物質であることを証拠立てるものではない、と

執念ぶかい楽観士義者はいった。そこで、といってＤＤＴを志願者にあたえて研究するわけには

ゆかないので、マイアミ大学医学部の医師たちは、ガンで死んだ人について、生体組織切片検鏡

法をやってみて、事故死した人のそれと比較した。その結果はＩ、前者のＤＤＴ量は後者の三

倍も多かった。事故で死んだ人はアメリカ人の平均である約一〇ｐｐｍ、ガッ死亡者は二〇―ニ

五ｐmであった

わたくしは、人間は霊的存在だと考えている。

　なぜならば、人間が、特殊な生命形態を持っているからである。

特殊な生命形態とはどういうものか？

　釈尊の「成仏法」を修行すると、それがよくわかるようになるのであるが、こ

こは、瞑想によって悟りを完成し、仏陀になられた大霊覚者ゴータマーブッダ、

釈尊の語るところによって、それを知っていただこう。

大意］

　わたし（釈尊）は、つねに努力精進し、その想いは確立してすこしもみだ

れず、体は安楽で動揺せず、心は禅定に入って静かである。そのわたしがあ

るとき、瞑想に入ってしだいに禅定が深まってきた。第一禅定から第二、第

三、第四禅定まで深まるにつれて、心に想い浮かぶなにものもなくなり、喜

びや楽しみだけとなり、そして遂にはそれもなくなって、ただ清浄な想いだ

けとなった。

　そのとき、わたしの心は、一点のけがれもなく、清く明るく、絶対不動で

あった。そしてわたしの心の眼はおのずから前世の光景に向けられていっ

た。それは一生だけではなく、二生、三生、十生、二十生、そして無限の生

涯の、生きかわり死にかおりした光景が展開してきた。これが第一の智慧で

ある。

それからわたしの心は、あらゆる衆生の相に向けられてきた。わたしぱ

超人的な眼力でその相を見た。そこには貰いもの、賤しいもの、美しいも

の、醜いもの、幸福なもの、不幸なものの、それぞれの宿業が渦巻いてい

た。これが第二の智慧である。

　それからわたしは、苦・集・滅・道の四諦（四つの真理）をありのままに

知り、わたしの心は、あらゆる存在の相から、全く解放され、ふたたびそれ

に執着することはなくなった。これが第三の智慧である。

　釈尊は瞑想によって、自分の前生の、二生、三生、十生、二十生、さらには無

限の生涯の、生き変わり死に変わりしてきた光景を見ているのである。それは自

分だけではなく、あらゆる人間の前生と、さらに後有（このっぎの人生）を見て

いるのである。

　釈尊はここで、決しておとぎ話や、たとえ話、寓話をのべているのではない。

釈尊の成仏法を修行すれば、その真実であることがすぐわかる。その修行によ

り、わたくし自身、人の三、四世代前、そしてつぎの世代における存在までは透

視できるようになっているのである。

　人間の生命は、多くの人たちが考えているように、決してひとつの生涯だけで

終わるものではないのである。ある生涯が終わったら、またひきつづき、つぎの

生命形態に移っていくのである。

　多くの人たちはその認識がなく、ひとつの生涯のみで、人の生命は終わるもの

と思っている。ここに、決定的な、そして致命的な生命観の欠陥があるのである。

霊性とはじつにそれを知る趨性なのだ。

　人の依って来たるところを知り、去るところ、往くところを知る能力である。

いわゆる来所を知り、往所を知る智慧である。これを得れば、人はおのずから、

なにをなすべきか、なにをなさざるべきかがわかってくる、そこから人間の真の

進歩、発展がスタートするのである。それがないから、人間は、霊的に少しも進

歩せず、発展せず、いつまでも低いところを輪廻して、無限にさまよい歩いてい

るのである。いや、それだけではない。その果てに、人間は、自分の住む人切な

世界を、自らの手で壊滅させてしまうことになるのである。
