阿含宗のはじまり
旅立ち宗教へ信仰の系譜
その当時のわたくしの信仰というと、準肌観音をご本尊とする観音信仰であった。
なぜ、この信仰をもつにいたったかといえば、仕事に大失敗した時、わたくしは、自殺
を決意したことがあった。
道楽したり、怠けたりしたわけではないのに、トラブルが重なり、大きな負債を背負っ
てしまった。債権者に連日責められる羽目となった。
そこで、二、三日、自分の行く末をじっくり考えてみたいと思い、父が戦争中に拵えて
いた、田圃の中の工場跡ヘバッグーつ提げて出かけていった。
二、三日考えているうちに、もう生きているのが面倒になり、いっそ死んでしまえ、と
いう心境に陥ってしまった。いわば、死神がついたということであろう。
死神がつくということがどういうことなのか、この時わたくしははじめてわかったよう
な気がした。だんだん視野が狭くなってきて、目の前が暗くなる。そのうちに、目の前十
センチくらいしか見えなくなってしまって、死ぬこと以外は何も考えなくなってしまう。
どうやって問題を解決するか、などというようなことには、もう頭が回らないという、
考える気力もなくなって、死ぬしかないという気分に陥り、あとは、どうやって死のうか
と、そればかりを考えるようになる。そうなると、もう死ぬ方法も鉄道自殺など面倒にな
り、とにかく手近にあるもので、と死にたくなる。
そんな状態になっているうちに、明け方になり、いよいよ首を吊ろうという気になっ。
そして、寝ころがったまま、あの戮あたりに縄をかけて、などと考えながら天井を見上げ
ていたところ、棚が目につき、その棚から何か小さなものがちょいとはみ出しているのが
見えた。ふと好奇心がわいて、「あれ、何んだろうな」と思って、ひょいと立ってみた。
これが転機となって、死神がはなれたのであろう。このことがなかったら、わたくしは確
実に首を吊っていたと思う。それまでは、思考が完全に停止し、死んだ後、誰が困るかと
か、そういった死ぬこと以外の、ほかのことは何んにも考えなくなっていた。
とにかく、立ち上がってそこに見たのは真新しい小さな経巻であった。幅二、三センチ
長さ五、六センチ、厚みＩセンチ弱、の小さなものであった。
この工場を引き払って、もう三年にもなるのに、どうしてこの棚に経巻が置き去りにな
っていたのかと、いぶかしく思いながら、ふと父から以前聞いたある話を思い出した。
父の収引先に中村語郎さんという方がおられた。父は陸軍から引き取った払下げ品のＩ
部を製紙原料として、この中村さんの会社に納めていた。
中村さんは製紙原料問屋としては当時日本一といわれた人であったが、道楽もだいぶし
たらしく、若い頃から苦労がたえず、一時は「おけらの語郎」とさえいわれた人であっ。
そのどん底の時に、前途に希望を失った中村さんは「いっそ死んでしまおう」と、冬の木
枯しが吹き荒ぶ時季に、洗い晒しの浴衣一枚を着て、近くの川へ出かけた。橋の上から身
投げしようとしたところ、いまや飛び込もうとした寸前に、通りかかった人に、「お待ち
なさい」と呼びとめられ、
「あなたは死ぬつもりでしょう」
といわれた。
「いや、死ぬつもりじゃない」
「ウソをいいなさいＬ
「いやあ、実はお察しの通りです。しかし、お情けだから黙ってこのまま死なせてさだい」
といった押し問答の末、
「とにかく、わたくしのところへまずいらっしゃい。それから死んでも遅くないでう」
と、その場はひとまずその人の勧めにしたがい、立派な家に連れてゆかれた。ご飯を食
べさせてもらいながら、事情を話したところ、その人は、
「実は、わたくしもその昔、自殺しようと思ったことがあった。その時、やはりある人に
呼び止められて、『あなたは神仏に対する正しい理解がないから、そういうことになるの
です』と諭され、少しのお金とともにお経をくれた。それで自分も死ぬのを止め、信仰を
もって一生懸命に働いた結果、こうしていっぱしの商売人になった」
と、自分の過去を、中村さんに話して聞かせた。
それ以来、その人は、自分を救ってくれた人への恩返しのつもりで、その時手渡された
ものと同じ経巻をたくさんつくって、多くの人に布施しているということであった。
この話を聞かされた中村さんは、大いに勇気づけられ、その経巻と、とりあえず飢えを
しのげる程度のお金をいただいて、その人の家を去った。その後、一生懸命に働いて、つ
いには、日本一といわれる 紙原料問屋を築いたというのである。
そして、その中村さんもまた、助けてくれた人と同じ道を歩みたいと、一生に何十万巻
かの観音経を布施することを念願された。。ある時、中村さんは父に向かって、
「あなたは何百人もの人を使って陸軍の大きな機械相手の仕事をされているが、非常に危
険な仕事でしょうから、一つこれをお守り代わりにみなさんに差し上げてください」
ということで、この観音経を父に一千巻布施してくださったとのことである。先に述べ
た通り、父は、自分の入れた臨時人夫を指揮して二十四時間作業の機械相手の仕事をしていたのである。
父は特に信仰というものはなかったが、尊敬している人格者の中村さんのお話であった
から、素直にありかたくいただき、全員に配った。それが少し余っていたと思われる。不
思議なことに、その一巻が偶然棚にころがっていたわけである。どう考えてもそんなとこ
ろにあるわけはないのだが、事実あったのである。いまでも不思議に思っている。
このお経には考えてみると、一つの系譜というものがある。この経巻の布施によって、
中村さん、中村さんを助けた人、そしてまたその人を救った人等々、みな自殺を思いとど
まらせている。いままた、自殺寸前のわたくしがこれを手にした。これは本当にただ事で
はない。これは自分を救おうという何か大きな目に見えない意志が働いているのではない
か、この意志に従うべきではないか、その時そう思った。
その刹那、パーツと考えが変わった。ちょうど太陽が昇る瞬間に、開に光が射すかのよ
うに、あるいは夜が朝に変わるかのように、心が生き生きと晴れやかになっていった。
「死ぬのをやめよう」「生きよう」と、わたくしは自分自身に誓った。そして、この観経
によって、わたくしが本当に救われたならば、中村語郎さんと同様に、わたくしもこのお
経を布施しようと決心した。
ちょうどその時、山の向こうに朝日が昇ろうとしていた。わたくしは、その太陽に向か
って合掌した。そして、声を出して誓ったのである。「どうか私に再起の力をあたえて下
さい。もしも、このお経の中に書いてある通り、私が救われたならば、私は生涯にこのお
経を百万巻布施いたします」と。
その後、三年間、わたくしは死にもの狂いで働き、当時の借金は全部返済してしまった
のである。
そこで、このお経の功徳が大変なものであることがわかったので、どのようにして、そ
れを多くの人びとに布施するかということを考えた。要するに、この時考えたことは、う
んと儲けてお寺に寄付するとか、この観音経をもとにして何かのグループを結成し、自分
がスポンサーになって、有能な有徳の士に中心になってもらい、その功徳を広めようとい
うことであった。
観音経に感謝し、誓願も立てていたが、まさか自分自身が宗教家になろうとは、その頃
は夢にも思っていなかった。
いま、阿含宗の信徒に授けている勤行式は、その経巻をそのまま模したものである。
観音慈恵会の設立 ニ
そうした諸々の経緯を経て、生麦に出てきたわけであるが、その前後から、完全に治っ
ていたと思っていた身体がまた悪くなり、要注意の状態になったが、行で死ぬなら本望だ
という気持もあって、どんどん荒行を実行した。
一方、運命学のほうは、アマチュアではあったが、相当勉強もし、多くの人たちの運命
を実際に見るという経験も積んだ。したがってすごく当たると、一部ではかなり評判にな
うていたので、ちょっと宣伝でもすれば、昔の友人や仕事の関係者などい
てきたと思う。しかし、そういう生き方、やり方では、過去の因縁を切ることにはならな
いと考え、徹底して誰にも知らせなかった。過去とまったく絶縁することが因縁を切る第
一歩であると思った。過去の引っかかりで収入を得たり、飯を食っていたのでは過去の業
は消えぬと思ったのだ。
このような次第で、わたくしは、生まれ変わったつもりで、自分自身が救われた観音経
にもとづき、準眠観世音菩薩をご本尊として、観音慈恵会をはじめた次第である。
それまでにわたくしは、仏教の本格的な勉強をしたことがない。だから、自分自身でも
坊主になったつもりもなければ、宗教家になったつもりもなく、一介の求道者として歩み
はじめたのである。この求道生活によって、一人でも多くの人が救われることが、わたく
し自身の罪障消滅になり、因縁解脱につながるのだ、という固い信念があった。
わたくしは、自分の力で、入を救うなどという大それた気持をもったことは一度もない。
自分が救われ、中村語郎さんが救われ、そのまた前の人が救われたという、この救われる
一つの系譜というか、その救いの流れの中に、人を入れてあげることによって、入を救う
ことができるのではないか、あるいはその救いの流れに入るきっかけをつくってあげるだ
けでも、わたくしの役割を果たすことができるのではないか、それで、人が救われるとし
たら、その功徳がわたくしにき、て、因縁が一つ一つ切れていくであろう。そう思って、昭和二十九年の秋口に観音慈恵会をはじめたわけである。
きっかけが、観音の慈しみと恵みであったから、会の名称を観音慈恵会とし、至極簡単
に名前をつけたわけである。それまで使っていた名刺をひっくり返して、その裏にペンで
「観音慈恵会」と書いて、表札がわりに入口に貼っておいた。
こうして、桐山靖雄という一求道者が、どれだけのことができるか、やれるところまで
やってみよう、ということで観音慈恵会が船出していったわけである。

At this time, I seemed to understand for the first time what it means to have a god of death.
I felt like. The field of view is getting narrower and it gets darker in front of me. In the meantime, ten in front of me
I can only see about a centimeter and I don’t think about anything other than dying.
I can’t think about how to solve the problem anymore.
I don’t have the motivation to think, I feel like I have to die, and how do I die?
And that’s all I have to think about. In that case, the way to die is troublesome, such as suicide by train.
Anyway, I want to die because it’s something I have at hand.
While in such a state, it was dawn and I was finally motivated to hang my neck.
Then, while lying down, I looked up at the ceiling thinking that I would hang a rope around that sword.
When I was there, I noticed a shelf, and something small was sticking out of the shelf.
Looked. Suddenly, I was curious and wondered, “What’s that?”, So I stood up.
This may have been a turning point, and the god of death may have separated. If this weren’t the case, I would be sure
I think he was really hanging his neck. Until then, thinking completely stopped and who would be in trouble after dying
Or, I didn’t think about anything other than dying.
Anyway, what I stood up and saw there was a brand new small sutra. A few centimeters wide
It was a small one with a length of 5 to 6 cm and a thickness of less than I cm.
It’s been three years since I left this factory, why is the sutra left behind on this shelf?
I wondered if it was, but suddenly I remembered a story I had heard from my father before.
There was a person named Mr. Toro Nakamura as the recipient of his father’s collection. His father was a surplus I took from the Army
The department was used as a raw material for papermaking and was delivered to Mr. Nakamura’s company.
Mr. Nakamura was said to be the number one wholesaler of paper raw materials in Japan at that time, but he also has a lot of hobby.
Apparently, he had been struggling since he was young, and at one point he was even called “Okera no Goro.”
At the bottom, Mr. Nakamura, who lost hope in the future, said, “Let’s die,” the winter tree.
During the dry season, he wore a washed-out yukata and went out to a nearby river. From the top of the bridge
When he tried to throw it, he said to the passing person, “Wait,” just before he tried to jump in.
Called “Please”
“You will die”
It was said.
“No, I’m not going to die”
“Tell me a lie L
“No, you’re right, but it’s a pity, so please shut up and let me die as it is.”

“Anyway, come to me. Then don’t be late if you die.”
And, for the time being, I was taken to a fine house according to the person’s recommendation. Eat rice

“Actually, I used to think about committing suicide a long time ago. At that time, I was told by a certain person.
He was stopped and said, “You don’t have the right understanding of God and Buddha, so that’s what happens.
I was told, and he gave me a sutra with a little money. So he stopped dying himself and his faith
As a result of his hard work, he became a business man like this. ”
I told Mr. Nakamura about his past.
Since then, the person was handed over at that time with the intention of giving back to the person who saved him.
He said that he made many sutras that were the same as the ones and applied them to many people.
Mr. Nakamura was greatly encouraged when he heard this story, and he was hungry for the time being with the sutra.
He left the person’s house for a surplus of money. After that, he worked hard
He said that he built the best paper raw material wholesaler in Japan.
And Mr. Nakamura also wanted to follow the same path as the person who helped him, and hundreds of thousands of volumes in his life.
It was hoped that the Kannon Sutra would be applied. .. At one point, Mr. Nakamura turned to his father.
“You have been working with hundreds of people against large Army machines, but it’s very dangerous.
It’s a tough job, so please give this one to everyone as a talisman. ”
So, he gave his father a thousand rolls of this Kannon Sutra. Mentioned earlier
As you can see, his father commanded his temporary laborer to work as a machine partner for twenty-four hours.
My father had no particular faith, but it was the story of Mr. Nakamura, a person with a respected personality.
Therefore, I asked them to be honest and distributed them to everyone. It seems that it was a little left over. Not
Curiously, the volume happened to be on the shelf. No matter how you think about it
It wasn’t there, but it was. I’m still wondering.
If you think about this sutra, there is one genealogy. By applying this sutra,
Mr. Nakamura, the person who helped Mr. Nakamura, and the person who saved that person, all thought of suicide.
I’m letting you go. Now again, I, on the verge of suicide, got this. This is really just a thing

I decided to apply the sutra.

Sai. If I was saved, as written in this sutra, I would be this one in my lifetime

After that, for three years, I worked madly and paid off all my debts at that time.

Therefore, it turned out that the merit of this sutra was great, so how did you do that?
I wondered if I would apply this to many people. In short, what I thought at this time was
Make a lot of money and donate to the temple, or form a group based on this Kannon sutra and yourself
Will be sponsored by a talented and virtuous person to take the lead and spread the merit.
It was a matter of fact.
He thanked the Kannon Sutra and made a vow, but at that time he never decided to become a religionist.
He never dreamed.
The work ceremony that is currently being given to the members of the Agon Shu is a copy of the sutra.

After all these circumstances, it came out in Namamugi, but before and after that, it completely healed.

With that feeling, he went on to do more and more rough deeds.
On the other hand, although fate studies were amateurs, they studied a lot and the fate of many people.
I also gained the experience of actually seeing. Therefore, if you hit it very much, it will be quite popular in some parts.
I was talking about it, so if you just advertise it, there are old friends and people involved in work.
I think he has come. However, such a way of life and way of life does not cut off the cause of the past.
I thought that it was, and did not inform anyone thoroughly. No. 1 that completely insulates from the past

I thought it wouldn’t disappear.
By such a situation, I thought I was reborn, and I was saved myself.
Based on this, the Kannon Charity Society was started with the quasi-sleeping Kanzeon Bodhisattva as the principal image.
By then, I had never studied Buddhism in earnest. So even myself
I didn’t mean to be a shaven or a religionist, I walked as an investigator
I started. I hope that this life of quest will save as many people as possible.
There was a firm belief that it would eliminate his own sins and lead to the elimination of the cause.
I have never had a big feeling of saving the entrance by myself.
I was saved, Mr. Tokuro Nakamura was saved, and the person in front of me was saved.
Save the entrance by putting people in one genealogy, or in the flow of salvation.
I think I can do it, or I will create an opportunity to enter the flow of salvation.
But maybe I can play my part, and that will save people
Then, the merit will come to me, and the ties will be cut off one by one. With that in mind, I started the Kannon Charity Society in the fall of 1945.
Because the reason was the mercy and grace of Kannon, the name of the association was changed to Kannon mercy association, and it was extremely easy.
I gave it a name. Turn over the business card you were using and use a pen on the back
I wrote “Kannon Jiekai” and put it on the entrance instead of the nameplate.
