　四〇枚の板のどれ一枚でも、必要量のレベル以下の部分に穴があると、すべての栄養素は、
そのレベル以下になってしまって、欠乏するのである。
　だから、必要量はみなちがうけれども、必須栄養素はそれぞれ必要量の100ハーセント
をみたさなければならないのである。つまり、タルに穴をあけてはいけないのである。

臓、肺、脳、神経は、いずれもタンパク質からできているか、あるいは、タンパク質にその
機能の多くを頼っているのである。
　それに、生物に必須の化学反応を触媒する酵素も、タンパク質でできている。
　食物としてとり入れられたタンパク質は、タンパク消化酵素によって、アミノ酸にまで分

におられようとも、或いはまた宗教というものの存在を否定されておられようとも、私は、

兎に角、

　「貴方は、一体、宗教とはどういうものだと考えていますか？」

　という質問をして、貴方が、宗教というものをどのように考えておられるか、そのお考

えを聞いてみたいと思うのです。すべてはそれからだと思うのです。

　何故ならば、宗教というものは、一口に宗教という言葉で云い表わされてはおるものの、

云う人に依って実に様々な解釈や考え方をされておるのです。それは、決して、宗教を持

つている人、持だない人、或いは宗教を否定しようとする人、というように、それぞれの

立場の相違から考え方が違うというのではなく、同じように宗教を持っておりながら、或

いは、同じように宗教を持かないでおりながら、それぞれ宗教というものに対する考え方

が違っておる場合が非常に多いのです。ですから、いま、私の話を聞いて頂くに当って、

先ず最初に、その点をはっきりしておかねばならぬと考えるのです。

　世の中には、往々にして、宗教というものは、死んだ人を祀ったり拝んだりするもので

あると考えたり、或いは、科学的に存在を証明することが出来ない神さまというものをか

つぎ出してきてアテにならない御利益を祈ったりする非合理的な、いわば迷信に凝ること

であると考えたり、或いはまた、－宗教とは精神修養の一種であって、どんな苦しい生活の

中でも、精神的な安楽や慰め、自己満足を見出すことであるというように考えている人が

非常に多いのであ・ります。

　もしも、貴方が、宗教をそのように考えておられるとしたら、それは間違いであります

から、訂正して頂かねばなりません。

　宗教というものは、我々生きている人間がどのようにしたら幸福に生きて行かれるかと

いうことを目標に、人間の持つあらゆる条件と本質を探究し、解明して、その方法を把握

し、確立したものであります。決して、死人を祀ったり拝んだりするためのものではなく、

また、迷信的な神さまや仏さまに、つじつまの合わない金儲けや病気治し等の御利益をね

だったりするものでもなく、まして、いくら病気が苦しくても、いくら生活が苦しくても、

苦しいと思わずに楽だと思えば楽に思えて幸福になるなどと教える自己満足的な精神療法

の手段でもありません。そういうものは、すべて「宗教らしいもの」ではありますけれど

も、本当の宗教ではないのです。

　本当の宗教とは、現実的に、生きている我々に、幸福に生きるための方法と条件とを示

すものでなければなりません。それが本当の宗教というものであることを先ず知って頂き

たいと思うのです。

　そうして、もしも貴方が一つの宗教に入っておられるのであったら、貴方のその宗教が

この基準にあてぱまるものであるかどうかを考えて頂きたい。

　また、もし、貴方がまだ宗教というものに入ったことがなく、宗教というものに触れた

り、宗教というものを考えてみたことがなかったとしたら、これを機会に、宗教というも

のをひとつじっくり考えてみて頂きたい。

　また、もし、貴方が、宗教を否定する考えを持っておられるのであったら、貴方は実際

に自分の頭でもって宗教というものを考えてみたり、宗教というものを深く研究してみた

上で、そうして宗教というものは人生に不要のものであると考えたり、そういうものはな

いと否定したりしているのであるかどうか、もう一度考えてみて頂きたい。人が、或いは

或る本が、宗教ぱ迷信であると云うから、ろくに考えてもみずにただもうその意見をウ呑

みにしていたり、宗教を肯定することは何か時代おくれの古い考えであるように考えて、

兎に角一口に否定しさえすれば新しい近代的教養を待った人間のように見えるから、とい

うような浅薄な考え方から否定の態度をとっているのではないか、もう一度考えてみて頂

きたい。

　そう、私は云いたいのです。

　すべて、生命あるものには、常に自己を「より良い状態」に置こうとする現象が見られ

ます。

　これは、生命の本質であって、むしろ、「常に自己をより良い状態に置こうとする働き」

そのものを、「生命」と呼ぶと云った方が適当かも知れません。が、兎に角、この働きは、

生命あるものすべてに見られる現象で、人間のみならず、理性の存在が認められない鳥や

けもの、昆虫の類に至るまで持っております。生命にこの働きがある故に、生命に持続と

進化の現象が見られるのであって、つまり、この能力を最高度に発揮した生命体が、その

種族に於ける最優秀者となって繁栄すると云えるわけであります。

　生物界に於て、人間が霊長類という最優秀者として君臨するようになったのも、他の生

物がただ本能的にのみしかこの能力を発揮することが出来なかったのに反して、人間ぱ、

その持つ知性と霊性によってこの能力を認識し、発展せしめて行ったからに外ありません。

人間は、この生命現象が一つの法則によって成り立ち、一つの法則によって動いていると

いうことを発見しました。そうして、その法則の適用如何によって、人間の生命体は、或

いは「良い幸いなる状態」を示し、或いは「不幸なる悪い状態」を呈することを知ったの

です。

　この「生命現象の法則」を知ることが、宗教というものの眼目であり、この「生命現象

の法則」を生命の現象である我々の実生活上に適用してゆくのが「信仰」というものの実

体なのであります。

　哲学者エマースンは、人間の大多数は殆ど生存しているのに過ぎない、われわれは

生活をする人間とならねばならぬという意味のことを申しましたが、まことに我々ぱふり

返って反省してみますと、ただ単なる生命現象として生存しておるのに過ぎないような生

き方をしやすいのであります。

　人間はなんのために生きているのか、生命とは何か、そういう人生の根本も知らずして、

ただその日その日を行きあたりばったりに生き存えているＩ―‐－。しかもそれは明日の知れ

ない、一寸先がどうなるかも分らぬ不安の生活であるＩ‐‐。これでは、どこに人間の価値

があるか、どこに人間の尊厳があるかと云いたくなりますね、ただ生きているというだけ

なら、犬だって猫だって生きておりますよ。

　自己の生命を認識するＩ。人生に目覚めると云ってもいいでしょう。

　それが宗教の眼目なのです。

　宗教とか信仰というものが、決して現実逃避の気休め的のものではなく、また、現実を

離れて霊魂とか死人の世界をほうこうして歩くものでもなく、我々が幸福に生きて行こう

と望むかぎり、我々が自己の生命に忠実に真剣に生きようと考えるかぎり、必ず叩かねば

ならぬ門であるということを先ず念頭に入れて頂きたいと思うのです。
