◆ヴァネヴァー・ブッシュ
インターネットのルーツとなる概念を生み出したのが1940年代に「Memex(メメックス)」を考案したアメリカの技術者ヴァネヴァー・ブッシュ氏です。「Memex」とは「MEMory EXtender(記憶拡張機)」の略で、マイクロフィルムに記録された資料やデータに索引を付けて有機的にリンクさせるシステムでした。ブッシュ氏自身は情報学に疎く、「Memex」もマイクロフィルムベースのアナログな機器での活用が前提となっていましたが、このアイデアはウェブやHTTPなど、インターネットの根幹となるシステムの先駆けとも言える概念でした。
◆J・C・R・リックライダー
最初期のネットワークシステムの基礎となる概念を提唱したのが、1960年代に「Man-Computer Symbiosis(人間とコンピュータの共生)」という論文を発表したJ・C・R・リックライダー氏です。この論文は、1台のPCを複数のユーザーが同時に活用するタイムシェアリングシステムの開発に大きな影響を与えたほか、「近い将来、人間の脳と計算機械が密に結合される」とも書かれており、サイバネティクスやAIの出現を予見していたとも言われています。
◆ヴィントン・サーフとロバート・カーン
1970年代の米高等研究計画局(ARPA、後のDARPA)ではインターネットの起源であるARPANETが使用されていましたが、当時は様々な通信方式が乱立していました。そこにTCP/IPという通信方式を導入したのがヴィントン・サーフ氏とロバート・カーン氏です。TCP/IPとはネットワークを介してデータをパケットとして送受信する現在の通信プロトコルの中核となるデータ転送技術で、この技術の登場を契機にARPAと関係機関のみで使用されるネットワークに過ぎなかったARPANETは全世界規模のインターネットへと成長していくこととなります。
◆レイ・トムリンソン
PCやスマートフォンを持つほとんどの人が何気なく利用している電子メールや「＠(アットマーク)」付きのメールアドレスを開発したのがレイ・トムリンソン氏です。1971年に世界で初めて送信された電子メールの文面は「QWERTYUIOP」だったとのこと。
◆ティム・バーナーズ＝リー
1989年、欧州原子核研究機構(CERN)に勤めていたティム・バーナーズ＝リー氏は、CERNの研究者たちが研究データを共有するために開発された「ENQUIRE」というシステムをさらに発展させたハイパーテキストシステム「WorldWideWeb」を開発しました。先述のHTTPや「URL」「HTML」もこの時に生み出されたものです。

◆ポール・モカペトリス
1983年にアメリカの情報科学研究所(Information Sciences Institute)でDNS(Domain Name System)を開発したのがポール・モカペトリス氏です。TCP/IPネットワークに接続された機器はIPアドレスにより通信を行っていますが、DNSは数字の羅列でしかないIPアドレスと、URLやメールアドレスのようなドメインを結びつける重要な役割を果たしています。
