What is Seishi Bodhisattva?

The correct name is Maha-Seishi Bodhisattva. It is said that he illuminates everything with the light of wisdom and saves people from confusion and suffering. It is sometimes written as Daisei Bodhisattva. Wisdom represents the ability to correctly discern the true nature of things and the ability to make sound judgments.

He is depicted as a triad with Kannon Bodhisattva, the right attendant of Amida Buddha, and is rarely enshrined alone.

In the case of the Raigo-style Amida Triad, which became popular with the rise of Pure Land Buddhism, Kannon Bodhisattva is depicted holding a lotus pedestal on which the spirit of the deceased rests, while Seishi Bodhisattva is depicted with his hands clasped together in prayer. In addition to standing and seated statues, they are also seen kneeling.

It is said to grant clarity of wisdom, safety for the home, and protection from disasters and the blessing of good fortune. He is the guardian deity that protects people born in the Year of the Horse, and is also said to bring good fortune, ward off misfortune, and help those born in the Year of the Horse achieve their wishes.

Bodhisattva Seishi, whose Sanskrit name is Mahāsthāmaprāpta (महास्थामप्राप्त [mahāsthāmaprāpta]), is a bodhisattva in Buddhism. He is also known as “Mahasthāmaprāpta,” “Great Diligence Bodhisattva,” and “Great Greatness Bodhisattva.” Currently in Japan, he is known as the guardian deity of the Year of the Horse and the principal deity of the first anniversary of the death of the Thirteen Buddhas. His sammaya form is an unshrunk lotus flower. His seed (seed character) is saku (सः saḥ).

It is said that one can attain the wisdom to live without straying from one’s path as a human being, and that it brings blessings of safety for the home and good fortune.
