千という数字は、広大無辺をあらわします。一 切衆生を救済するための手や眼のとどく範囲が広 大であるということを象徴した、大慈大悲そのも のの観音さまです。

このように、千手観音は、観音がもつ慈悲の力 をいちばん強調した姿といえましう。

病気を治して衣食住を満たすという「十二の大願」を立て、生きている間に願いを叶えてくれます。阿弥陀如来のように死んだ後にやすらぎを与えるのではなく、現世にやすらぎを与えてくれるのが特徴です。昔の作例はとくに病気平癒を願ったものが多数存在します。

日光菩薩と月光菩薩を脇侍として三尊として並ぶことが多いです。
