初転法輪
さて、まずだれに説いたら受けいれられるであろうか。
むかしかれが師事した二人の仙人はすでに世を去っていた。つぎに思いあたるのは、六年聞か
れにつかえた五人の比丘である。
そこでかれは、かれらがいるベナレス郊外の、修行者の集まっているミガダーヤｍｉｇａｄａｙａ（鹿野苑）、現在のサールナートに行った。
五人ははるかにシャカの来るのをみて、たがいに誓って、堕落したかれを立って迎えないことを約したが、その威力にうたれて、思わずかれを立って迎え、洗足の水を出し、座席を用意した。
それでも内心かれを軽べつしていたが、やがてかれに法を説かれるにしたがって、シャカが最
高のさとりを得て仏陀となったことを知り、その教えによって、かれらもまたさとりを得て、阿羅漢ａｒｈａtという最高の聖者となった。そこで、シャカをはじめとする六人の阿羅漢が出来た。
ここで説かれたシャカ最初の説法を初転法輪という。
転法輪とは、転輪王がその輪宝を転じて全世界を征服するにたとえて、仏が説法することを法輪を転ずるといったものである。

Shaka’s first sermon preached here is called first-turn falun.
